The concept “Life flow” is a submission to the Heidelberg University Hospital’s art contest for the new building housing the gynaecological and dermatological departments, 2011/2012. This concept foresees having pictorial objects which change colors step by step, in all the corridors of the hospital.

Concept Description
“Life flow” is the title of an art concept which relates to the gynaecological and dermatological departments. More precisely, it relates to the perception of those persons within the hospital building – the patients, the visitors and the staff. The common denominator of these various people is the continuation of life. This is what the patients and their friends and relatives are striving towards and what the doctors and nurses are striving to uphold. Especially, the continuation of life is the focal point in reference to the newborn babies in the gynaecological department.
The continuation of life is the idea behind the artistic proposition. The artwork hints at the dimensions, the variety and the richness that is contained in the continuity of life. The dimensions, the variety and the richness can only be lived, but the artwork can bring awareness to the experience.
The art concept makes life flow visible:
>through its presence in all the building’s corridors
>through the inter-relating repetition of directional motifs
>through the formal width of variation of the flat colour objects
>through a changing colour climate that relates to the walls
>through a grade of abstraction, far from any mimesis
The individual objects on the walls and ceilings are opaque, whilst transparent on the windows. They are each circa one meter in length.
The people in the building will come across the artwork “Life flow” wherever they go – be it the main floors, the rest areas or the room of tranquility. Even from outside – in the courtyard – it will be seen through the glass façade of the main floors.
Above and beyond the artistic statement of the art concept, perceptional awareness will be increased as follows:
>upgrading of space from functional to sensual
>personal identification with specific surroundings
>individualization of specific locations using varying objects
>orientation and recognition of often used routes and pointers
“Life flow” should be an interpretation of the everyday life of the hospital.
