In July, the Farbzirkel concept was entered in a competition for the University of Rostock. According to the requirements, the task was to create a piece of art for the entrance hall of the University’s main building that would guide visitors into the building and that would stand on its own without dominating the space. The work should, if possible, also connect to the University’s motto, Traditio et Innovatio. The restored 1870 interior design also had to be taken into consideration.

Explanation of the artistic concept:
Farbzirkel is an extension of the existing architecture through the medium of painting. The aim is to intensify and deepen the experience of the space. The spatial experience consists of receiving a message and identifying with the location.
>
The message derives from the functionality of the space. The hall is both an entrance and a passage to knowledge and insight. This is the theme for the space and for the artwork, implemented by using expanding concentric bands of colour.
>
The location has a powerful and unique identity rooted in both a historical structure and an age-old institution. This is also expressed in the motto Traditio et Innovatio. Farbzirkel relates to this identity and gives it meaning.
Individual relationships to the institution’s identity:
The vaulted ceiling is given meaning by using it to frame, to span and to house a picture and, thus, an idea. The centre of both the architecture’s and the painting’s structure are congruent. The colour scheme of the space forms the basis for the colour concept of the painting. Although the famous Rostock Atlas is no longer present in the hall, its aura lingers on.
Traditio et Innovatio are mirrored in the concept of the painting.
Traditio is balanced symmetry.
Innovatio is the tension of asymmetry.
Traditio rests in itself.
Innovatio is dynamic movement.
Traditio is concentration on a starting point.
Innovatio is expansion into the future.
Traditio is the coherence of the circular form.
Innovatio is the fragmentation and reproduction of segments.
Traditio is bound to earth tones.
Innovatio is the luminescence of strong and intense shades.
Farbzirkel is an art installation whose coloured panels are mounted several centimetres in front of the wall. The panels energise the space, similar to wandering light reflections.
