The concept entitled “Heil-Wege” (Ways of Healing), which was submitted for a competition in March 2018 and has now been awarded the first prize, was extended at the wish of the client. The Immanuel Diakonie, which runs the Immanuel Clinic, the cardiac centre of the state of Brandenburg in Bernau near Berlin, wished above all to make visible its Christian character as the operator of the institution and to extend the artistic design beyond the entrance hall to the whole building. On 31 May 2018 further designs for this were presented. All proposals are based on the idea of individual ways of healing which can be related individually to the different patients and also to the overall purpose of the clinic generally. Furthermore, the five values of the Immanuel Diakonie resonate in the designs: Immanuel (the ego or individuality), care, justice, orientation to results and team spirit. (See Report 02/2018)

Several solutions were proposed for how to represent visually the theme of Christian love of one’s neighbour in a restrained way so that the entrance hall does not become a religious space. The Christian nature of the organising institution is not to be shouted out, but at most to be implied.

The geometrical structure of the image is the same in proposals 1 to 4. It diverges in proposals 5 and 6, as these proposals require new formal conditions. Three different approaches for the concept result from this: Ways of Healing I, Ways of Healing II and Ways of Healing III. For each of these approaches solutions were proposed for the outdoor area.

The motif of the Ways of Healing is applied to the wall at the places in the clinic building that are much frequented. The unchanging basic motif is seen in constantly new variations. The purpose is that a consistent message permeates the building.

A person’s way of healing is something individual and personal. Therefore it appears in every patient’s room, realised in art: in a single-bed room as a single way, in a double-bed room as a dual way. The clinic as a whole brings together the multiple Ways of Healing. This becomes visible in the artistic realisation outside the patients’ rooms.

The concept of the Ways of Healing in its formal appearance is to be coupled with the orientation system of the building: an orientation system as art, and vice-versa. Before this conceptual work can be tackled, basic modules are to show that such a plan can be implemented.
