On 25 August the design for the Magdeburg Module art concept was presented in person in Magdeburg. The design is a development of the proposal made in phase I, which was submitted more than a year ago (see Report 06/2020).

Three visual phenomena specific to Magdeburg merge to form a simple symbol: the M, the initial letter with its symmetry; the gate with two towers from the city coat of arms; and the towers of the cathedral, the emblem of the city. From this emerges a module, the core element for a series of murals. In this way Magdeburg is present everywhere, across all surfaces of the images.
The four murals are thematically distinct:
>
The city of Magdeburg as a place for orientation: (south side, towards the city)
Order, structure, coordinates, spatial quality and perspective.
Tangibility and comprehensibility of the urban space.
>
The city of Magdeburg as a place of culture: (north side, towards the city)
Diversity, encounters, activity. Thinking in every direction.
New, surprising constellations, again and again.
>
The city of Magdeburg as a place of traffic: (south side, away from the city)
A dynamic direction, motion, the transitory principle.
The movement is directed towards the city.
>
The city of Magdeburg as a place of experiences: (north side, away from the city)
The restrained, the contemplative. Fading in the imagination.
The waxing and waning of large areas and small-scale structures.
Implementation in the design:
From the Magdeburg Module, chromatic structures are derived that vary from one mural to another (according to the four themes). The module remains the sole element that is employed (the perspective diagonals in the theme “place of orientation” are an exception). The colour concept consists of an opulent orchestration of Magdeburg’s red and green, in combination with white (from the city coat of arms). Within the murals a colour narrative appears: from green to red, from colder to warmer shades of colour. This chromatic sequence is applied consistently on both sides of the traffic route – on the south side as on the north side. This gives rise to a spatial momentum.
