Sayner Hütte has undergone a transformation. It was once a technical facility. Today it is an industrial monument. It once fulfilled an economic function. Today it fulfils a function of social memory. The purpose of the proposed art object is to reinforce the function of memory by focussing on the original economic function, on the ironworks itself and on the core of its function: on the blast furnace. Inside the industrial museum, in the interior of the casting works, the blast furnace is the theme of educational interpretation. Outside, by contrast, it is to be presented in an artistic interpretation. This confirms the role of the blast furnace as the heart of the ironworks.
The characteristics of the blast furnace include roundness, height, and internal burning or glow. These characteristics are realised in an object by making the inside visible on the outside – in a lively, changing form, according to the position of the viewer. 27 vertical rods placed at irregular intervals form three concentric circles. The inner circle glows mysteriously through the outer circles. In this way, the object achieves a focussing effect in the outdoor area. The colourful character of the object contrasts with the dominant materiality of the surrounding iron, and at the same time points back to iron through its association with the blast furnace. The object is a labyrinthine walk-through installation, thus providing a haptic attraction for children.
