At the end of August 2022 a proposal was submitted to the art-for-architecture competition for the nursery school in Wiebelsheim. This interactive offering to the children, entitled “Drehbilder” (Turning Images), refers to the main educational themes of the school: nutrition and exercise.

The children have an opportunity to get involved, to perform a task and to gain access to the essence of artistic activity. They are familiarised with the medium of the image, with differences of shape and colour, and with the phenomenon of visual meaning.
They learn that an image is composed first and foremost from shapes and colours, and acquires meaning only for the eye that perceives it. But they also learn that an image that yields no meaning due to its random configuration can nevertheless be beautiful. This means that they learn that there can also be an aesthetic meaning that gives pleasure.
The turning images gives the children something that constantly changes. They are involved in this themselves. They change the image. “The image” means specifically that there are two walls, each of which comprises four motifs. One wall shows motifs from the world of experience. The other shows motifs from the world of (children’s) movement.
These motifs do not simply exist. They are produced for the children only when they place the turning rods in a certain position. This is a challenge that can captivate the children. The turning images are arranged in an object that can be seen from all sides, especially from the viewing axes. Its appeal lies in the fact that the children, small as they are, can create an enormous image.
