In late March 2023 a proposal was submitted for an art-for-architecture competition for the primary school in Mainz-Lerchenberg. Interiors in the stairwell here are to be adorned with designs that also extend outside to the façade.
The school pupils already encounter the basic motif on the outside before they enter the school building. On the façade they see two cascades of bands of colour that resemble a lively abundance of books or exercise books – or ribbons fluttering in the wind. In every case, regardless of a view of what is represented, they experience an upward-looking image of exuberance and joy. On the left side of the entrance in shades of yellow. On the right side of the entrance in shades of red. In this way the colours of the façade of the new building get a response and are orchestrated with chromatic differentiation.
The yellow cascade has a direct continuation to the interior through the window that it adjoins. It forms the basis structure for murals on both storeys. Vivacity and optimism rise in a painterly constellation. There is something to discover within it. Barely recognisable, perhaps perceptible at the third time of looking, letters and numbers appear, like a mysterious gift. The children realise that learning is exciting – and that learning can be enjoyable.
