A new art concept titled “The walking horizon” was presented at the end of 2010 for the conference area of the Hotel Grand Hyatt New York. The Grand Hyatt New York, in the heart of Manhattan and directly beside the Grand Central Terminal, is a historical building on the verge of a complete renovation. Within the scope of this construction work an extensive conference area will be created in which meetings, conventions and also events and weddings will take place. The aim is to create “social event spaces”. The New York architecture studio Bentel & Bentel are commissioned with the interior design. The aim of the concept is to deepen the “guest experience”. »… our new look and feel will exceed expectations …, bringing a fresh travel experience to our New York landmark.« Matthew Adams, Area Vice President New York for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. Arrival and renewed departure are the essence of travel experience. Travel experience is therefore also guest experience. This is the meaning behind the new social event spaces. They offer more than just a function but rather a feeling – guest experience. The meaning of guest experience lies in entering a room and emotionally accepting it. In these social event spaces, the viewer’s gaze falls back on walls, which separate the Interior from the Exterior, the Present from the Existing. The view behind confirms the Arrival. Departures are the opposite. The view is directed ahead to the walls which separate the Present from the Future. It is about these walls. They should not separate but create associations. They should not enclose, but open. They should present a horizon. For the Incomers, who look back and the Leavers who look forward. The guest experience flows into the experience of this horizon. Everyone sees the horizon. Social life acquires a reference point, a control point, an identification point – and finally a memory point. The horizon connects an interface between creativity on the inside and creativity on the outside. A series of pictures creates this horizon.

“The walking horizon” as a picture sequence:
Common principles give the picture sequence consistency, therefore creating the horizon. The varying application of principles makes each picture individual as well as giving the horizon an eloquent diversity. The horizon possesses a progressive direction through the increasing picture size. The horizontal accentuation of the horizon is achieved through the layering of planes. The horizon develops into a dynamic process through the rhythm of the vertical shapes. The horizon develops a swinging movement through the principle of the pendulum. The horizon acquires a progressive lightening through the organization of luminosity values. The horizon acquires color movement through the change in color scheme. The horizon is a richly diverse coherent whole. It has its own movement – parallel to the gaze of the viewer.
