New structures were found for the organisation of colour. Without building on the solution of the previous year, new approaches are taken in the first paintings of 2012. These are varied approaches that are developed in parallel and are often quickly replaced by new approaches. The diversity of developments and the large number of structures discovered are only comparable with those of the year 2003, which was greatly surpassed in heterogeneity. All in all the structures are more dynamic, more painterly and often more complex than in the previous years. Here two categories can be distinguished: structures on the basis of grids which can be either relatively simple or highly complex, and structures on the basis of additive processes. Such processes are repetitions of individual elements, which touch each other and undergo a small rotation with each additive step. This generates rows that describe a gentle curve. These curves or bends constitute the momentum of the whole structure and can no longer be derived from a grid. These conditions mean that the year 2012 – generalising – can be seen as a period of reinforcement. Stronger rhythms, stronger spatial effect, stronger inversions and thus stronger suggestion in every respect are established. This leads in the direction of an antipode to, on the one hand, the calm square structures of 1977 and 1978 and, on the other hand, to the large-surface visual solutions of the late 1990s. The suggestive power of the paintings is in many ways comparable to the type of images of the 1980s.
2012 was the year of the evolution of the mural painting for the Rems-Murr-Klinikum in Winnenden. The north wall of the main axis there, which extends over two storeys with a length of 178 metres, and is furthermore interrupted by 40 doors, niches and elevator controls, requires a visual narrative of high consistency. Added to this are the unusual conditions for perceiving the work. The viewer can never see the whole mural simultaneously, but only take it in successively on a walk lasting minutes. Such challenges operate back to reflections on panel painting.
