After one year, the renunciation of the integrated pattern means a renunciation of the complex picture patterns of the 80s at the same time. A completely new approach is developed. The basic module is a long stretched stripe-shaped diamond that allows diverse possibilities in formal feasible compositions. The diamond’s outer edges may touch but mostly on their inner edges as well. A limited stock of angles is the result. A principle of composition is individually selected, which then repeats itself like a program. In this way a regular pattern like a sort of bar grid is created. The pattern lies over the picture surface like a diagram or even choreography. Both analogies are consciously perceived and reflected in the work process. The cultivation of a program-created pattern is not new compared to former years. Only with the changed function do we have a novelty. The pattern no longer becomes the color medium. Instead it carries only the obligatory white. Through this homogeneity, the composition is no longer concretely visible, but rather traceable through symbolic logic. Essentially, the remaining free space, which is as regular as the pattern itself, is allocated color. The effects are diverse. Firstly, color may be handled more freely. Distribution and quantity are more flexibly managed. Other than that the color zones no longer adjoin as a rule. Color contrast now works only through the distance of white partitions. Above all the white becomes active, which it was not before. The white becomes the acting moment in the picture. It is also pulled spatially into the foreground. The idea of a white background is passé. In the course of the year, the regular patterns are replaced by more freer and intuitive compositions.
